Muthuvel Karunanidhi Passes Away
Muthuvel Karunanidhi was one among the few Chief Ministers who opposed Indira Gandhi when she declared the emergency in 1975. On August 7, the leader congressman who held five terms as the Chief Minister of the state passed away in Chennai. The leader’s mortal remains are at Kauvery Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment since July 28.
Muthuvel Karunanidhi, DMK Patriarch, and the Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister died at the age of 94. President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Congress President Rahul Gandhi visited him in the hospital over the week. Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal also visited the hospital on Monday.
The experienced diplomat had been sick and was out of politics for nearly two years. Following the decline in his health, his son Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin was appointed as the Working President of the party. The Tamil Nadu government announced a public holiday on Wednesday. Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Senior Leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to leave for Chennai tomorrow morning to pay their last respects. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Chennai tomorrow to pay last respects. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will also leave for Chennai tomorrow to attend the funeral of Karunanidhi.
